EPFL AI research cluster covers AI4Science, large model fine-tuning, AI for Climate, AI for Health, robotics. EPFL hosts the AI Center, the AI4Science Center, the Center for Intelligent Systems, and the Robotics Center. EPFL faculty include Marcel Salathé (digital epidemiology), Aude Billard (robotics), Caglar Gulcehre (LLM). Assessment: EPFL plays "complementary research strengths" with ETH Zurich — ETH is heavier on theoretical machine learning, EPFL on applications and embodied AI. Together they form a Swiss AI research two-pole structure, with Alps as their shared compute backbone and Swiss AI Initiative as their cross-pollination organiser.
