Detail
Swiss AI Initiative launched in December 2023 — a joint effort by ETH Zurich + EPFL + 12 Swiss universities + 75+ professors. Mission: "position Switzerland as a leading global hub for transparent and reliable AI development". Operations: pool computational, data, and talent resources to train sovereign Swiss large language models on the Alps supercomputer. Assessment: the Initiative is the institutional channel that turns Alps into a national resource — without this organisation, Alps would mainly serve ETH/EPFL. The initiative is closer in form to Canada's CIFAR Pan-Canadian AI Strategy than to Singapore's centralised AISG; it works because of high trust between Swiss universities, but is unlikely to scale to a country where universities are competitors rather than collaborators.
