Singapore is looking at Canada as a potential energy source as it anticipates further fuel disruptions from the Middle East. This is part of deepening cooperation in areas that also include supply chain resilience and AI. Some deals are also potentially ready to be sealed within the next few months. Singapore and Canada are looking to deepen ties across various sectors following Dr. Vivven Bal Krishnan's two-day visit. He and his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand agreed on a new economic partnership framework with both sides seeing room to build on their strengths that includes AI and the digital economy among others. >> We are looking at Canada as a source of energy for us.

We are looking at Canada as a source of food and in particular we're also looking at the possibility of having more formal arrangements for trade in essential supplies with Canada as well. >> Dr. Balak Krishnan also weighed in on Canada US tensions saying the two countries remain deeply integrated. He stresses that it is not Singapore's role to get involved in their bilateral ties, but Canada's broadening of its economic links opens up opportunities in Singapore and Asia.

It is a path of no regret for Canada to explore opportunities across both the Atlantic and the Pacific because Canada does have goods and services and products and resources which are in demand all over the world and Canada should maximize its opportunities for trade and investment across the Asia-Pacific and in Europe. >> That extends to Southeast Asia. Singapore takes over as ASEAN chair next year when the block and Canada also mark 50 years of dialogue relations. Dr. Bak Krishnan says talks on an ASEAN Canada free trade agreement are ongoing and hopes for a breakthrough in the coming months. >> Dr. Bala Krishnan was in Doha before his visit to Ottawa. He warns of further disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East and says Singapore has coped so far because of its diversified energy sources, but the situation remains a concern.
