Singapore and Sweden have pledged to work more closely on emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and quantum computing. A joint declaration was signed aimed at strengthening their technological capabilities and boosting economic competitiveness. Nicholas L with this report from Stockholm. There's a good chance that the digital backbone which brought this video to your screen was carried by communications technologies developed in Sweden, which is one of the critical technology fields it leads in. That's because some of Singapore's telco networks are built by the Swedish firm Ericson. That close relationship could extend into the communication systems of the future with quantum communications labs of both countries agreeing to deepen cooperation further last year.

The arrangement could herald even more collaboration across other fields. >> We both understand the importance of investing in our people and looking beyond immediate challenges. We both survive and prosper through organization including watching the traffic lights, innovation and by adding value to regional and global networks. President Thurman was speaking at a banquet in Stockholm held in his honor during his state visit to Sweden. The Swedish capital is where representatives from both sides signed a pact to collaborate on areas where their strengths can complement each other. Artificial intelligence is a priority. Also on the list are Internet of Things or IoT devices like smart doorbells and sensors as well as quantum and telecommunications technologies. Both sides say they'll aim to work together in four main areas.

first strengthening supply chain resilience through cooperation on semiconductors, advanced hardware and digital infrastructure. They'll also focus on cyber security and secure communications, sharing expertise in 6G technologies and encryption methods designed to withstand threats from quantum computers. They will also discuss the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, including how it should be regulated. And they'll look to cooperate on the world stage to shape international rules and standards governing emerging technologies. Beyond tech packs are reached between educational institutions too. The Lie Kuwanu School of Public Policy inked two deals with Swedish institutions to deepen academic and policy collaboration. They say such deals help Singapore gather expertise in particular fields to drive innovation.

We have to remember that most of the research that today happen is actually in the context of universities. So a lot of the research is done it's not just to write books and papers but is actually research that produce things produce IPs produce um apps produce products produce new innovation that that then are applied in the real world. The deals will see the institutions share expertise in policy and governance particularly with technical development and innovation management. Nicholas, CNA, Stockholm, Sweden.
