Sembcorp Industries is a Singapore energy and urban-solutions company spanning gas-fired generation, renewables, energy storage, and urban infrastructure. It currently supplies close to one-third of the electricity demand of Singapore's data-centre and semiconductor sectors, serving customers such as Equinix, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, and Singtel through long-term power purchase agreements. An additional 150 MW agreement with Micron brought total contracted capacity to 600 MW. The company also applies AI to its own operations, including video analytics at power plants and renewable sites and Hyperspace, an in-house predictive-maintenance platform.

📖 What it is

Sembcorp touches AI from both sides:

  • Powering AI: supplies data centres and semiconductor plants through long-term power purchase agreements with customers including Equinix, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, Singtel, and Micron; alongside gas-fired power it offers renewable-energy solutions for customers' decarbonisation goals
  • Running power assets with AI: AI video analytics at gas plants, wind farms, and solar sites flag safety risks; Hyperspace, a platform co-created by its digital and engineering teams, supports predictive maintenance by spotting equipment issues before they escalate

Outside Singapore, it is building large-scale power infrastructure for data centres at Wilton International in the UK, Vietnam's first AI-ready data-centre campus at Saigon Hi-Tech Park, and the Tembesi Innovation District in Batam, Indonesia, while Alinta Energy serves AI-driven power demand in Australia.

🤖 Relation to AI

The AI race is turning into an energy race. The International Energy Agency projects that electricity consumption by AI facilities will grow from about 415 TWh today to roughly 1,000 TWh by 2030. Whether a data centre can be built increasingly depends on securing reliable power, and Sembcorp sits at that bottleneck.

🇸🇬 Relation to Singapore

Singapore is short on both land and power, and data-centre expansion has long been constrained by electricity. Sembcorp supplies close to one-third of the electricity used by local data centres and semiconductor plants, so whether AI-infrastructure players such as Equinix, ST Telemedia, Singtel, and Micron can scale is tied directly to its supply capacity.
