Detail
The AI Committee was established by the AI Basic Act (effective January 2026) as a cross-ministry coordination body. Composition: chaired by the Prime Minister, with vice-chairs from the private sector and AI experts; coordinates between MSIT, the Ministry of Trade Industry and Energy, the FSC, and other line ministries. Functions: (1) reviewing the national AI strategy; (2) approving the AI Safety Institute's catalogue of high-impact AI; (3) handling cross-ministry AI policy disputes. Assessment: this is Korea's first formal AI cross-ministry body. Compared with Singapore's existing SNDGO + IMDA + MAS soft-coordination model, the AI Committee is more authoritative and chaebol-influenced (private-sector vice-chair seats often go to chaebol leaders). Whether it actually functions or becomes a paper organ depends on the Prime Minister's commitment and political continuity through 2026-2027.
