Detail
Proprietary large models from Samsung / Naver / Kakao are the most "product-shipped" part of Korea's AI strategy: (1) Samsung Galaxy AI (based on Samsung Gauss + Google Gemini Nano) shipped on hundreds of millions of phones in 2024-25; (2) Naver HyperCLOVA X (a Korean-language frontier model) powers Naver search and Clova X assistant; (3) Kakao KoGPT / Kakao i serves Kakao Talk's 45 million users; (4) LG EXAONE serves LG group plus a public API; (5) SK Telecom A.X serves telecom and customer service. Assessment: the "sovereign model + captive channel" combination from Korean chaebols is one of the few non-US AI products that can compete head-on with ChatGPT / Claude in vertical applications. But frontier performance (vs GPT-4o / Claude 3.5) trails by roughly a generation, with localisation and channel lock-in carrying most of the wins.
