Stargate UAE — a 1 GW hyperscale data centre — is the Middle Eastern first stop of OpenAI's Stargate initiative, announced during Trump's UAE visit in May 2025 and jointly executed by OpenAI + Oracle + SoftBank + UAE. Plan: a 1 GW AI compute park in Abu Dhabi, first phase 200 MW deploying from 2026, target 1 GW full load by 2028-2030. Assessment: Stargate UAE is the showcase project for "trading energy for an AI entry ticket" — the UAE's cheap gas underwrites continuous 1 GW operation in a way Singapore (power-constrained) and the EU (high energy prices) cannot match. But 1 GW ≈ a mid-sized city's electricity consumption; UAE will need local grid upgrades or new renewables.
