Mission: frontier AI safety research, model evaluations, international cooperation with US AISI, UK AISI, Singapore AI Safety Institute. Located within ISED. Specialisations: capability evaluations, alignment research, cybersecurity AI risks. Assessment: CAISI's strategic value goes beyond its operational capacity — being the third country (after US, UK) to create an AISI gives Canada a permanent seat in the international AI safety governance network. Singapore launched its AI Safety Institute in 2024 in parallel; the four-country (US-UK-Canada-Singapore) safety institute coalition is the de-facto governance backbone for frontier AI evaluations through 2025-2027.
